Senator Doug Stoner: A lifetime of service

Senator Doug Stoner is serving his second term in the Georgia State Senate, representing South Cobb County from Senate District 6, following one term in the House of Representatives (2003-04). He serves on the Senate Transportation Committee and special Joint Senate-House Transportation Funding Study Committee. He chairs the Intermodal Rail & Transit Subcommittee.

Senator Stoner is also chair of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce's Transportation Committee for the current year. A past chair of the Cobb Transit Board, he is well-versed on matters related to road and bridge construction, mass transit initiatives, commuter rail opportunities and other proposals under consideration to enhance mobility in and around Cobb and surrounding counties.

He also serves on the Senate Ethics, Regulated Industries & Utilities, Retirement, State Institutions & Property and Urban Affairs committees.

Senator Stoner is a lifelong resident of the 6th Senate District and is a third-generation South Cobb business owner and a member of the Smyrna Downtown Development Authority. He graduated from Campbell High School and Kennesaw State University. He and his wife Della are raising their two children, Gray and Honor, in his home community of South Cobb.

He is past president of the King Springs School PTA and an active member of the Smyrna Business Association and Smyrna First United Methodist Church. He also supports many community and youth programs, including sponsorship of Little League teams.

On the development authority, Doug succeeded in bringing economic progress and good job opportunities to our community without compromising our quality of life. He knows how important it is to preserve our way of life.

In 2004, Doug was elected to represent District 6 in the Georgia State Senate. In 2006, Doug was re-elected to the Senate with 61 percent of the vote. During his service, he has received the Georgia Association of Emergency Medical Services Star of Life Legislative Award (2007), Georgia Association of Educators Legislator of the Year (2005), Cobb County Association of Educators Cheryl C. Rice Friend of Education Award (2005), and Georgia Conservation Voters Environmental Leadership Award (2006 and 2008).

He previously represented South Cobb in the Georgia House of Representatives, and the American Cancer Society and the Georgia Alliance for Tobacco Prevention honored Doug for his legislative leadership for both the 2003 and 2004 legislative sessions.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has written that Doug Stoner "understands the connections among environmental, education and economic issues in improving Georgians’ quality of life."
